INTERNATIONAL RALLY NEWS
The 47th. International Rally in DuQuoin, IL on July 18-22, 2011 was a great rally. It was very hot and humid but green. They have had a lot of rain. DuQuoin received over 4 inches of rain the week before we arrived. It was difficult to park some of the rigs. The entertainment was great. Jim and Debbie did an excellent job of planning seminars and tours. We have several to pick from every day. There were 210 rigs on the grounds with 7 walk-ins. State count was 36 from Illinois, 28 from Florida, 19 from Ohio, 14 from Missouri and 12 from Pennsylvania. Region IV had 8 rigs. They used 149 gallons of ice cream (18 flavors, 4605 scoops) during the week. The charities collected a large sum of money which you can see the amounts in the "Ramblings".
We heard from Mike Snell, vice president of sales and product development for Monaco, describe some of the changes which included the new Tripp motorhome. Several other model are being restyled. The new units will have the Navistar MaxForce engine which does not require urea to be used where the Cummins engine requires urea to met emission standards. They are re-aligning the towable units with a new group of people who will be just involved with towables. They are saying several new rigs will be available by the end of the year.
We heard Bill Osburne, vice-president of custom products for Navistar Inc.'s Monaco and Workhorse Custom Chassis LLC subsidiaries, describing some of the changes they are making on the assembly line to help improve the quality of their products. His goal is to improve the product using some of his engineering background with several big companies. He is working on quality, innovation and service as the three primary areas. He told us that we would hear some interesting information soon but it was not ready for publication. As you know now they are re-locating some of the operations from Oregon back to Wakarusa, Indiana. The Oregon facility will be a Regional RV Service center as well as one in Wakarusa, IN. They are trying to find a location in the Southwest part of the US and possibly in Florida. My concerns from his discussion is that they are being extremely particular as they set-up a new dealership. He indicated that they wanted only dealers that would be able to service and sell all types of vehicles. He indicated that Holiday Rambler is a Family Brand with a unique interior look. Several of the most expensive motorhomes that have been built will be built by special order only.
Monday night was a great sight when the State Flags marched in by Regions. The flags were placed in stands on the east side of the meeting area through Friday night.
Tuesday afternoon, John Powell conducted the business meeting. Doyle McMurry with wife, Peggy was sworn in as Region IV Director. Region I Director, Scott Parkhill was unable to attend the rally due to health problems. John Powell installed the officers for 2011-12. They are Ray Nichols from Region VII, Treasurer; Doyle McMurry from Region IV, Secretary; and Tom Knight from Region III, Vice-President. Past National Director from Region I, Paul Brand, installed newly elected John Powell from Region II, President.
